Huang Renxun, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, recently spoke to Wired about his busy schedule traveling around the world in the past year and the global promotion of Sovereign AI by NVIDIA. During the interview, Huang was in Bangkok, Thailand, where he had scheduled meetings with fifty-six startup teams in a single day, experiencing the vibrant entrepreneurial atmosphere of the city. He mentioned that he had attended Rudy International, an international school in Thailand, when he was five years old, and now he feels familiar being back in Thailand.
Huang Renxun specifically emphasized that this trip to Thailand allowed him to fully realize the importance of Sovereign AI and the understanding that AI data is part of a country. Through artificial intelligence cloud databases, generative AI, and big data analysis, social and cultural knowledge can be fully utilized in various fields and benefit the people of the country.
What is Sovereign AI?
Sovereign Artificial Intelligence (Sovereign AI) refers to a country’s development of AI infrastructure through software and hardware equipment, data, labor force, and telecommunications networks. Investing in the development of Sovereign AI enables a country to simultaneously control data and develop applications in transportation, communication, commerce, entertainment, healthcare, and other fields. Many countries and state-owned telecommunications companies around the world have collaborated to develop AI cloud databases, fully utilizing AI data in education, healthcare, legal affairs, financial technology, and other application areas.
Sovereign AI promotes cultural and linguistic communication
Sovereign AI encompasses the infrastructure of physical and data databases, allowing development teams to train large language models on artificial intelligence databases, which can help people who speak different dialects communicate and increase inclusivity among different ethnic groups.
Since 2019, NVIDIA has been promoting the AI Nations program worldwide, supporting the development of AI ecosystems and employee education and training.
Countries around the world are investing in Sovereign AI
Scaleway, based in France, is building the most powerful native cloud AI supercomputer in Europe. Swisscom, a government-controlled group in Switzerland, recently announced the construction of Italy’s first NVIDIA DGX-powered supercomputer in collaboration with its Italian subsidiary Fastweb.
The Indian government has also announced the Sovereign AI initiative to promote workforce development. Tata Group in India is building a large-scale AI infrastructure supported by the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper superchip.
Singapore is cultivating a series of Sovereign AI projects, including upgrading the National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) with NVIDIA H100 GPUs. NVIDIA Hopper architecture GPUs are used to accelerate operations for Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel).
Japan is also actively developing Sovereign AI in collaboration with NVIDIA to support the development of large-scale LLM models in Japanese and enhance natural disaster defense capabilities. SoftBank and NVIDIA are working together to establish generative AI platforms for 5G and 6G as well as distributed AI networks.
