Chain News reported in September last year that the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Third Corps of the Police Department of the Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan, in collaboration with the Criminal Bureau’s liaison officer stationed in the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, successfully introduced the professional electronic product detection dog “Wafer” donated by the non-profit organization Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.) from the United States. This is the third such professional police dog owned by a judicial authority in Asia.
“Wafer” has so far solved three major criminal cases. According to the Criminal Bureau’s press conference on January 26th, last year in August, the Third Corps discovered the mastermind behind a major methamphetamine case, and in December, they supported the investigation and crackdown on election gambling, fraud, and money laundering cases. The police stated that WAFER can assist in searching for electronic devices at the crime scene and detect items such as tablets and mobile phones.
“Wafer” is not an ordinary police dog. It has K9 ESD detection ability and can sniff out the special chemical coating on electronic storage devices: Triphenylphosphine oxide (TPP0). From SD cards and mobile phones to hard drives, USB flash drives, and even cold wallets for cryptocurrencies, nothing can escape the sharp sense of smell of “Wafer”.
