Why is the Ethereum Cancun Upgrade (Dencun) Anticipated?
The Ethereum upgrade includes Dencun, Proto-danksharding/EIP-4844, and other upgrades. Proto-danksharding will introduce a new compressed data storage mechanism called “blob” to reduce transaction costs on L2 and make data availability cheaper. It also addresses scalability issues. Considering the rapid growth of L2, this upgrade is seen as an important part of the Ethereum roadmap.
The Cancun Upgrade is expected to go live on the third testnet, Holesky, on February 7th, with the final Ethereum mainnet upgrade scheduled for the end of the first quarter.

Many analysts expect the Cancun Upgrade to increase the adoption of L2 based on Ethereum Rollup. However, a few analysts are skeptical about the short-term impact of the Cancun Upgrade on L2, believing that Arbitrum One and Optimism (OP) will remain the mainstream L2 solutions.
