Vision Pro Attracts Attention, but the Ecosystem is Still Small
Last year, Apple released its official VR head-mounted device, Apple Vision Pro, which was officially launched recently. With features such as dynamic eye tracking technology, high-performance image processing capabilities, and gesture signal reception, it brings a brand new human-computer interface experience to the market and enhances the user experience and application scenarios of existing products.

Although Apple did not mention the metaverse at WWDC 2023 last year, Sebastian Borget, the COO of The Sandbox, predicts that such applications will increasingly need the integration of Web3 and blockchain, and Apple will be forced to accept this technology. He also looks forward to the combination of generative AI (AIGC) and VR features to enhance the immersive experience of the metaverse.
Yemel Jardi, the Executive Director of Decentraland, expressed optimism about Apple Vision Pro and its significance for the entire industry because the metaverse needs hardware as its foundation. Decentraland hopes to have better hardware. On the other hand, Yemel pointed out that another key factor is digital characters. Based on operational experience, it is difficult for people to interact with cartoon characters, and Vision Pro can allow users to create hyperrealistic digital characters to solve this problem. Based on these factors, Yemel believes that Vision Pro can integrate well with Decentraland, and users will be able to enter the metaverse using this device.
Unity, the game engine that has a partnership with Apple, introduced the visionOS SDK at WWDC 2023, which provides developers with Unity PolySpatial technology to create applications that can run on Apple Vision Pro, such as games, scene simulations, digital twins, and education applications. However, currently, this feature is only available to Unity Pro, Unity Enterprise, or Unity Industry subscribers.
Render Network, a decentralized image rendering project, has appeared multiple times in Apple’s promotional videos and events. Its core technology is also one of the most important elements in VR and AR. Therefore, there are rumors that Render Network may collaborate with Apple in the future. After the official launch of Apple Vision Pro, Render Network’s parent company, OTOY, also released a simulated game called Archive in the Apple Store, which is specially designed for the space experience of Star Trek, allowing users to explore hundreds of fully simulated scenes and objects covering nearly 60 years of history in the series.

The launch of Apple Vision Pro undoubtedly drew attention to many crypto projects and successfully introduced a new level of immersive experience technology to the market. Each project has high hopes for this device and expects it to advance the development of the metaverse industry. However, currently, both the user and developer numbers are relatively niche, and the software ecosystem on the supply side has been criticized for having too few applications. On the other hand, Vision Pro still has many areas for improvement, such as long-term wearing comfort, input mode compared to traditional keyboards, battery life, etc., which are all key challenges that affect its signature user experience. Therefore, there is still a long way to go before hardware can drive the widespread adoption of the metaverse.
