Why is the Cancun Upgrade so Important?

After a series of tests on the developer testnet, the Ethereum core developers have finally confirmed during the 127th conference call that, if there are no issues with the Holesky testnet deployment, the mainnet upgrade will take place at block height 8626176, around March 13th, 21:55 Taiwan Time.
This is the latest major update since the Ethereum Shanghai upgrade in April 2023.
Why is it so important?
The key focus of the Cancun upgrade is to introduce proto danksharding to provide blob storage, reducing the cost of constructing Layer2 data availability (DA) on the Ethereum mainnet.

The Ethereum Foundation hopes that with this update, L2 projects can remain within the Ethereum ecosystem instead of choosing other data availability layers such as Celestia or EigenDA. However, the choice still lies with the L2 development teams, and recently, there have been many emerging projects with a more distant relationship with the foundation, which gradually reduces Ethereum’s control over DA’s orthodoxy.
Therefore, the Cancun upgrade has always been seen as having a significant impact on the competitive relationship between existing chain infrastructure ecosystems.

As the competition in the data availability layer intensifies, Ethereum’s dominance is gradually diminishing. The long-awaited Cancun upgrade carries the hopes of many, all wishing to make the Ethereum ecosystem stronger and more sustainable.
Although it is delayed by a few months compared to the expected time, it has finally reached the final stage, and we look forward to the upcoming upgrade process going as planned.
