Active member of the Ethereum community, Polynya, wrote an article introducing the importance of stateless infrastructure and reminding developers that decentralization is not exclusive to blockchain. They should choose the most appropriate tool based on their needs, and stateless infrastructure may be a good option for most use cases.
In this article, Polynya views blockchain, including Layer2, as a carrier of global consensus, where all nodes have the same latest state and consensus infrastructure. On the other hand, stateless infrastructure refers to infrastructure without consensus or with loose consensus rules.
Examples of stateless infrastructure include IPFS, BitTorrent, Farcaster Hubs, and ZK Coprocessors. In IPFS, for instance, as long as one node is willing to provide certain data, it can be accessed without depending on other nodes.
Using stateless infrastructure can lead to greater efficiency and scalability compared to blockchain. Even for applications that require global consensus, such as finance and identity, other infrastructure components, such as centralized servers and IPFS storage, are more suitable for most computations and data storage.
The future of products lies in the combination of various technologies rather than solely relying on blockchain. Stateless infrastructure and blockchain complement each other in achieving competitive decentralized applications. By integrating these technologies, it becomes possible to create applications that were previously impossible.
Stateless infrastructure can actually be more decentralized than blockchain, as achieving strict global consensus on the blockchain is difficult and costly. Stateless infrastructure, on the other hand, often operates based on the assumption of a honest minority, requiring only one honest node for operation.
It is time to stop the endless pursuit of blockchain technology and instead focus on the real needs and problems, using the appropriate tools or a combination of different infrastructure to create more complete and competitive products.
The important thing is to build useful Web3 applications, rather than focusing solely on the efficiency of the blockchain.
