Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin attended the Pragma London Summit hosted by ETH Global on March 14th, where he called for a shift in thinking within the Ethereum community to focus on building decentralized applications and solutions based on Layer 2 (L2) technology. He emphasized the importance of L2 scaling solutions following the completion of the Berlin upgrade.
According to Cointelegraph, Vitalik praised the significance of the Berlin upgrade in reducing the cost of submitting proofs to the Ethereum mainnet for L2 Rollups, enabling scalability. He stated that the upgrade allows the Ethereum ecosystem to move away from a Layer 1-centric framework and that the mainnet is now in a phase of slower development, transitioning from rapid updates to a focus on maintenance. He also highlighted the ongoing advancements in Layer 1 technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), which provide privacy protection and make it easier to build DApps on L2. Compared to five years ago, it is now much easier to develop such applications.
Vitalik also discussed the next decade for Ethereum, stating that the first ten years focused on internal development and product building within the ecosystem. However, he emphasized that the next decade will require significant changes in development approaches in order to have a major impact on the internet and traditional financial systems. He expressed the need for Ethereum to break free from its previous focus on catering to high-end developers’ needs and create technologies that have a profound impact on the world. Vitalik expects that the L2-oriented mindset should dominate in the future, with a focus on application developers.
