FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, a sentence that many in the crypto community believe is not enough. Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, on the other hand, pointed out that compared to the crypto villains of the previous era, former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles is the only one deserving of forgiveness.
Before receiving his 25-year sentence, SBF made a final statement in court, apologizing to his FTX colleagues.
Vitalik’s tweet did not mention SBF specifically but stated that among the crypto villains of the previous generation, Mark Karpeles is the only one deserving of redemption. Vitalik emphasized that unlike others who loudly demanded a return to the mainstream, Karpeles quietly engaged in interesting activities. Vitalik compared Karpeles’ tweets to those of others and highlighted their differences.
In contrast, Mark Karpeles, besides expressing his happiness about Mt. Gox starting to repay its debts, mostly discusses non-crypto-related matters on Twitter. Another image shows Kyle Davies, co-founder of 3AC, constantly commenting on his meme coin leverage investment portfolio.
Jake Chervinsky, former legal counsel for Compound and the Blockchain Association, also commented on SBF’s sentence, expressing his belief that it is unjust. Chervinsky compared SBF’s situation to that of Ross Ulbricht and highlighted the disparity in their sentences. While SBF will be imprisoned for 25 years, Ulbricht was sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years, which Chervinsky sees as unfair.
In related news, the Silk Road founder will be imprisoned until death.
