OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, announced his departure today (5/15).
Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, said: “Ilya and OpenAI are parting ways. This is very difficult for me. Ilya is undoubtedly one of the greatest thinkers of our generation, a guiding light in our field, and a dear friend. His talent and vision are well-known. His warmth and empathy, although less known, are equally important.
Without him, OpenAI would not be what it is today. Although he has some personal matters to attend to, I am forever grateful for everything he has done here and committed to fulfilling the mission we started together. I am glad that for so long, I was able to be close to such a truly brilliant mind and someone so dedicated to realizing a better future for humanity.
Jakub (Jakub Pachocki) will become our new chief scientist. Jakub is also easily one of the greatest thinkers of our generation. I am thrilled that he is taking over. He has driven many of our most important projects, and I have great confidence that he will lead us towards rapid and safe progress in achieving our mission of ensuring AGI benefits everyone.”

Sutskever’s departure comes after a split within the company. In November of last year, the board, including Ilya Sutskever, decided to dismiss Sam Altman due to perceived lack of transparency in communication.
Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora
Tasha McCauley, co-founder of Fellow Robotics and scientist at RAND Corporation, also known as the wife of actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI (expressed regret over the decision to split OpenAI)
Helen Toner, director of the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University
However, due to the threat of collective resignations from OpenAI employees, Sam Altman returned and the board was restructured. It seems that Ilya Sutskever was still unable to continue at OpenAI and chose to resign.
