Formella expressed that Gambaryan was illegally detained in Nigeria, and the Nigerian government not only violated his human rights but also endangered his life. He demanded the Biden administration to take prompt action. Previously, the U.S. Department of State officially recognized Gambaryan as a “U.S. citizen illegally detained by a foreign government” and called on the Nigerian government to uphold the constitutional rights and basic human rights of all political prisoners. The Department of State also stated that they are actively communicating with the Nigerian government, but have not received a response yet.
